New Orleans Saints rookie wide receiver Jordyn Tyson (hamstring) could take a significant step toward his debut this week. His return to the practice field could come as soon as Wednesday (Oct. 21) in Paris.

Locked On Saints host Ross Jackson said Tyson is not expected to play Sunday (Oct. 25) against the Pittsburgh Steelers, but opening his 21-day practice window would give the rookie a runway through the bye and toward the Cleveland Browns game.

Tyson’s possible practice return matters because the Saints can use the window to gauge more than his recovery. Jackson noted that conditioning, route detail and command of the playbook will determine when Tyson is ready for game action.

The club must activate him off injured reserve and place him on the active roster before the 21-day window expires or leave him on injured reserve for the rest of the season.

A return around the Cleveland game on Nov. 8 would give quarterback Tyler Shough another option alongside wide receiver Chris Olave. Jackson said Tyson’s work from both the slot and the perimeter during training camp could give the passing game an inside-out target capable of attacking the middle of the field or winning outside. He also viewed Tyson’s blocking as a potential addition to an offense trying to build on its improved rushing attack.

The Saints do not need to force Tyson into the lineup in Paris simply because he can practice. A measured ramp-up through the bye would allow the offense to add him when he can contribute to the full route tree rather than in a limited role. That patience could be especially valuable if New Orleans carries its run-game commitment into the next two weeks and creates more favorable play-action and short-passing opportunities for Shough.

Participating in practices Wednesday through Friday will offer the first indication of Tyson’s timetable.

Saints News and Notes

– Jackson said the Saints ran 38 times for 175 yards against the New York Giants, an approach that helped them control the game before three late three-and-outs failed to drain meaningful clock. Carrying that commitment into the game against Pittsburgh would ease the burden on Shough and create a more balanced offense.

– Saints linebacker Kaden Elliss (calf) also traveled to Paris after missing the previous three games. Jackson said Elliss could be another player to monitor during the practice week, which would matter for a defense seeking more available contributors after protecting a 24-point lead against New York.
