Tuesday night rocked the College Basketball world as the news that Hubert Davis is leaving North Carolina was made public. With the Tar Heels beginning the hunt for their next leader, one name has potentially surged to the top of the short list: Florida’s Todd Golden.

Fresh off a national championship run with the Gators, Golden is the sought-after coach in the ranks, but bringing him to Chapel Hill requires a massive financial commitment. According to insider Jon Rothstein, Golden’s buyout at Florida sits at a staggering $16 million. Among the elite candidates, this is the highest figure linked to the vacancy.

While UNC is one of the few programs with the resources to make such a move, an eight-figure hurdle remains a significant factor in the decision-making process.

Since Florida's dominant March Madness run last season, Golden’s stock has hit a new high. Industry insiders believe he is the best in the current college landscape. His ability to win at the highest level makes him the primary target for a program with North Carolina's championship expectations.

According to ESPN, at just 40 years old, he recently became the fastest coach in Florida history to reach 100 wins, accomplishing the feat in just 139 games—15 faster than the legendary Billy Donovan.

The Tar Heels are not just looking at Golden, however. The list of potential replacements is a who’s who of the coaching elite. Arizona’s Tommy Lloyd carries an $11 million buyout, while Alabama’s Nate Oats sits at $10 million as of April 1. Michigan’s Dusty May, another name gaining traction, has a more manageable buyout of $7.5 million. Other names in the mix include Iowa State’s T.J. Otzelberger and Texas Tech’s Grant McCasland.

Securing Golden would require UNC to outbid a Florida program that recently extended him through 2031. Golden’s current deal pays an average of $6.75 million annually, making him the fourth-highest-paid coach in the NCAA. For North Carolina, the choice is clear: pay the $16 million premium for the reigning national champion or pivot to a different veteran leader.
