NBC Called Out For Prioritizing Savannah Guthrie Over Winter Olympics

NBC is receiving plenty of backlash Tuesday for the way it handled its coverage of the Milana Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics.

Initially, NBC cut away from its Tuesday afternoon coverage of the Olympics to provide an update on “TODAY” anchor Savannah Guthrie’s mother. She was last seen outside of her Arizona home on Jan. 31. The FBI obtained several photos and videos of an unidentified person at Nancy Guthrie’s front door.

“Over the last eight days, the FBI and Pima County Sheriff’s Department have been working closely with our private sector partners to continue to recover any images or video footage from Nancy Guthrie’s home that may have been lost, corrupted, or inaccessible due to a variety of factors – including the removal of recording devices. The video was recovered from residual data located in backend systems,” FBI Director Kash Patel said. “Working with our partners – as of this morning, law enforcement has uncovered these previously inaccessible new images showing an armed individual appearing to have tampered with the camera at Nancy Guthrie’s front door the morning of her disappearance. Anyone with information, please contact 1-800-CALL-FBI or visit http://tips.fbi.gov.”

When NBC cut away from its Olympics coverage the first time around, fans didn't have an issue with it. The mood completely shifted on Tuesday night though.

NBC paused its "Primetime in Milan" coverage to reveal that a person was detained for questioning in the Nancy Guthrie case.

Judging by the comments being made on social media, NBC should've stuck with its Olympics telecast.

"What is NBC doing? I thought the Winter Olympics were on." one fan commented. "We don’t need this special report."

"OK @NBC we don’t want or need a 10+ minute interruption of the Olympics for MORE on Nancy Guthrie," a second fan said. "Save it for tomorrow."

"NBC is breaking into prime time Olympics coverage to give us an update on the kidnapping of Nancy Guthrie? Seriously? I thought maybe we were at war or something… this is just dumb," another fan wrote.

"Why are you interrupting the Olympics for Nancy Guthrie news," a social media user tweeted at NBC. "How many people get inducted every day that you don’t cover. Pathetic."

What's the latest on Nancy Guthrie?

The Pima County Sheriff's Office announced on Feb. 2 that Guthrie was most likely abducted from her house.

“We saw some things at the home that were concerning to us,” sheriff Chris Nanos told reporters. “We believe now, after we process that crime scene, that we do in fact have a crime scene, that we do in fact have a crime, and we’re asking for the community’s help.”

It's unclear if the person who was detained in Tucson on Tuesday night was the one shown in the doorbell camera footage.

Hopefully, this horrifying situation is resolved as soon as possible.
