The NBA’s long-anticipated expansion into Las Vegas and Seattle looks close, but a new report suggests the process is not fully locked in.
According to Howard Beck of The Ringer, league sources believe a major financial twist remains in play. If another ownership group steps in with a massive bid, potentially $10 billion or more, the NBA could shift direction away from its expected destinations.
"One more twist, per sources, albeit a speculative one," Beck wrote. "If another city with NBA aspirations were to emerge with a lucrative offer—say, $10 billion or more—it’s conceivable that the league could turn away from Seattle or Vegas. Because, again, this is ultimately all driven by money."
That possibility stands out because Las Vegas and Seattle have been viewed as the clear frontrunners. Seattle’s case ties back to the former Seattle SuperSonics, who relocated and became the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2008. The market has pushed for a return ever since.

Las Vegas, on the other hand, has grown into a major sports hub, already home to teams across multiple leagues and a regular host for high-profile events.
The league cleared its initial hurdle, as an initial vote was passed without resistance, and bids are expected in the $7-10 billion range. A second vote will likely take place before the end of the year, which will determine if the expansion will go ahead or not.
If it's approved, the timeline points to the 2028-29 season for the expansion teams to start their journey.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has expressed confidence in the league's talent pool and has pushed back on concerns about watering down the league. In the league's view, expansion remains sustainable.
Still, the financial angle might be the most important deciding factor. If a new city presents a stronger bid, the NBA might not have a choice. The expectation remains Seattle and Las Vegas, but the door is not fully closed on a surprise entrant.
