NBA commissioner Adam Silver is being urged by some in the media to "shut down" the WNBA for the time being.
Silver is the leader of the NBA, but he's also technically the overseer of the WNBA, too. The NBA owns the WNBA and has helped operate it for decades. But while the WNBA has been experiencing major growth and attention in recent years, it's also been subject to a lot of controversy in recent weeks.
On Saturday, tensions boiled over once again, as Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark was hit with a ridiculous technical foul for accidentally bumping into a referee during a play. This was pretty absurd.
The WNBA ended up rescinding the technical foul, so Clark will not be suspended, but fans are still agitated.
Aaron Torres of Fox Sports is urging the WNBA to be "shut down" by Adam Silver for the time being.
"I seriously think its time for Adam Silver to consider shutting down the WNBA. League has lost money for 30 years and cant go a literal day without a national embarrassment. In a national TV game, featuring two high profile teams, this is what we get. No one wants this," he shared on X.
Fans debate Torres' suggestion
"This is a bit extreme my guy. Sure, there are definitely things that need to improve in this league just like every other league which had to grow through it's first 30-50 years. Let's not act like every other league didn't have it's issues in the beginning stages. Relax.." one fan wrote.
"Nobody wants hard fouls, drama, and fights?" one fan added.
"It would save the nba some money to spend on something useful so I’m all for getting rid of the wnba," one fan added.
What do you make of what's happening in the WNBA right now?
