Luka Doncic is missing out on the 2026 NBA Playoffs, and for the Los Angeles Lakers, that reality is becoming harder to work around with every passing game. During the regular season, Doncic led the entire league with 33.5 points per night across 64 games, giving Los Angeles a genuine leader alongside LeBron James.
The Lakers still found a way past the Houston Rockets in six games without him, leaning on James and solid contributions from the rest of the rotation. But the Oklahoma City Thunder are a different breed. Their pace, depth, and offensive firepower make Doncic's absence feel that much heavier as the Lakers push through this series.
Amid constant questions surrounding Luka Doncic’s recovery timeline, Brian Windhorst shared on ESPN’s “Get Up” that he believes the Lakers already accepted the reality of the situation heading into their Western Conference semifinals series.

"I don't think the Lakers have been under the delusion that [Luka Doncic] is going to come back. I think they've gone into this series with Oklahoma City knowing he's not gonna be there, and he articulated that in a way that's clear." Windhorst said. "Basically, what I would say is --- You can push that aside. Focus on what the Lakers have to try to piece together tonight in this series. Luka Doncic is not coming to the rescue."
Windhorst pointed to the organization finally putting an eight-week recovery estimate on record after weeks of avoiding a firm timeline. A Grade 2 hamstring strain can carry uncertainty, but that update effectively pushes any realistic return deep into the postseason. Potentially all the way to the NBA Finals.
Where Luka Doncic Stands in His Recovery
Ahead of Game 2 in Oklahoma City, Doncic gave his most detailed injury update yet. He confirmed he has started running again, which is a step in the right direction, but he still hasn't been cleared for contact work.
He also revealed that doctors originally projected an eight-week recovery window following his first MRI, which explains why the process has stayed gradual even as he feels himself improving day by day.
Doncic said he's sticking to the rehab plan and not trying to force anything. He acknowledged this hamstring has been more stubborn than the one he dealt with back in January, which by comparison was far less severe and required a much shorter recovery.
This time around, the buildup has demanded more patience before he can even think about returning to game action. Despite that, Doncic made clear he's staying active throughout the process, working out daily and doing everything he can to get back on the floor as quickly as the recovery allows.
