The Washington Nationals received an unsettling update regarding one of baseball's brightest young stars on Monday night.
After exiting the Nationals' 6-3 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies, outfielder James Wood was revealed to be dealing with a left-side injury that will require further evaluation. The news comes at a difficult time for Washington, which has now dropped six consecutive games and is already trying to climb back into the National League playoff race.
Wood has been one of the biggest breakout stars in Major League Baseball during the 2026 season, making any injury concern especially significant for the Nationals. Nationals Provide Concerning James Wood Injury Update
Wood appeared to tweak his left side during his final swing of the game in the sixth inning against Philadelphia.
Shortly after the game, Nationals manager Miguel Butera provided an update that quickly caught the attention of fans and reporters.
According to Underdog MLB, Butera confirmed that Wood will undergo imaging after experiencing discomfort in his side.
"James Wood (side) to undergo imaging."
Butera later added that Wood injured his left side on his final swing of the sixth inning and is scheduled to receive an MRI on Tuesday.
At this point, the Nationals have not provided a timetable for his return, and the results of the MRI will likely determine whether the injury is simply a day-to-day issue or something more serious.
