The Daytona 500 is set for later on Sunday and it's always a hard day for the Earnhardt family.
Back in 2001, legendary NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Sr. was killed in the iconic race. He died on February 18, 2001. He died in a major crash on the final lap of the 2001 Daytona 500.
It's been 25 years.
Dr. Steve Bohannon, who was on hand for the race, spoke to Outkick about the traumatic scene that he witnessed.
"It's a terrible thing to see somebody die," said Dr. Bohannon. "I was just focused on taking care of my patient, it didn't matter who they were. We went into the trauma bay, and, you know, I knew he wasn't going to make it back."

The crash was so severe that the doctor knew Dale Sr. had passed away once he arrived on the scene.
"I think everybody knew at the scene," he said. "Everybody knew that he had passed away at impact. I knew all the medics, and they shook their heads when they saw me walk up. I went in and checked his pulse, and saw the blood coming from the ears and from the airway, and knew it was a basal skull fracture and that he had no sense of life."

NASCAR fans are thinking of Dale Jr., his wife and kids and the rest of the Earnhardt family on Sunday, amid the anniversary of the crash.
"It's hard to believe it's been 25 years since we lost Dale Earnhardt," one fan wrote.
"Today NASCAR honors and remember the tremendous life of 7x Winston Cup Champion - Dale Earnhardt who tragically passed away at the End of the Daytona 500 25 years ago in 2001," one fan added.

The 2026 Daytona 500 is scheduled to begin later on Sunday afternoon, at 2:13 p.m. E.T. It'll air on FOX.
