Naomi Osaka’s refusal to attend post-match press conferences at the 2021 French Open sparked one of the biggest controversies in tennis history, leading to her $15,000 fine and withdrawal from the Grand Slam.
The four-time major champion said ahead of the tournament that she would not be doing any media conferences, citing her mental health.
Osaka said she had been feeling uneasy about interacting with the media and felt that being questioned repeatedly could have a bad impact on her well-being.
Why Did Naomi Osaka Boycott Press Conferences?
Osaka made the announcement on social media prior to her first match at Roland Garros. She said that the old-fashioned post-match news conferences may be detrimental to athletes, especially following an emotionally challenging match.
In her original statement, Osaka said that she had always felt that people didn’t care about athletes’ mental health, and that she hoped her decision would bring about change in the system.
She also stated that she was prepared to pay the fine and that she expected to be fined.
After defeating Patricia Maria Tig 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) in the first round, Osaka withdrew from the tournament before playing her second-round match. She did not attend the press conference, but she did do an on-court interview. The tournament officials then fined her $15,000 for breaching her media commitments.

How Did Naomi Osaka’s Controversy Escalate?
All four Grand Slams issued a warning for the fine. Failure to comply with media requirements could lead to further sanctions, such as default from the tournament and possible suspension from future Grand Slams, officials said.
On May 31, Osaka pulled out of the French Open instead of continuing the battle. She then shared more details about her mental health issues, stating that she had suffered from depression after her breakthrough 2018 US Open win.
Her choice sparked a global discussion on the duty of top athletes and their right to prioritize their well-being. Some players agreed with Osaka, others said that press conferences were a regular part of pro tennis.
