Inter Miami head coach Cristian “Kily” González and five players have been sanctioned by Major League Soccer after the mass confrontation that took place during the club’s 2-1 loss to the Columbus Crew on Sept. 27.
The MLS Disciplinary Committee ruled that Inter Miami violated the league’s Mass Confrontation Policy in the 26th minute at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field. MLS confirmed that it was the first time this season that Inter Miami had violated the policy, and that they were fined for it, as well as González. Five Miami players were also fined for their involvement.
MLS Fines Inter Miami and Kily González After Incident
The disciplinary committee determined that Inter Miami violated its Mass Confrontation Policy in the 26th minute of the game, according to MLS. The league’s rules of competition state that a mass confrontation is when three or more people from the same club are acting in concert against an opponent, a club official, or an official of the officiating crew.

In its official announcement, MLS did not reveal the dollar amount of the fines. The league, however, has confirmed that both Inter Miami and González were sanctioned after the club’s first violation of the policy this season.
The incident came during a dramatic match that ended with Columbus winning 2-1. Josef Martínez scored from the penalty spot before Lionel Messi leveled with a free kick. Jamal Thiaré then netted the game-winner late in the game.
Five Inter Miami Players Also Receive Fines
MLS also fined Sergio Reguilón, Micael, Yannick Bright, Rodrigo De Paul and Daniel Pinter. The disciplinary committee stated that the players were disciplined due to their involvement in “inciting and/or escalating a mass confrontation.”
Reguilón and Micael were on the defense, and Bright and De Paul were in midfield. Pinter also made his debut in the starting lineup with Messi and Luis Suárez.
The official ruling explicitly states fines and not suspensions for the five players. That distinction is that they will not be automatically ineligible for Inter Miami’s next MLS game due to this specific disciplinary action.
The penalty is another controversial moment in Miami’s frustrating night in Columbus, where the team gave up the winning goal in the eighth minute of stoppage time.
