The New York Mets have started the MLB season strongly, currently leading the National League East with a 7-4 record and having the fifth-best winning percentage in baseball.
New York arrived at Tuesday's series-opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks with momentum after winning three consecutive games against the San Francisco Giants, in which they scored 18 runs while allowing only five.
The Giants, meanwhile, have struggled to begin the season, sit near the bottom of the standings at 4-8, and have produced just 3.0 runs per game—the lowest mark in Major League Baseball.
San Francisco is operating under first-year manager Tony Vitello, who could do nothing against the Mets after stealing the first game from New York.

During SNY's broadcast of Tuesday’s game against the Diamondbacks, former Mets infielder and MLB great Keith Hernandez returned to the booth after recovering from a back injury and bluntly addressed what he saw from the Giants while watching from home.
“I tried to watch the Giants series, but the Giants played so horribly that I had to turn it off,” Hernandez said. “Had nothing to do with you guys. It just was… the defense, I just was stunned. When it was finally 6-0, I turned it off.”
Hernandez's comments referenced the third game of the series played on Saturday, which the Mets won 9-0.
The Giants committed three errors on the day to New York's one, but the Mets made quick work of San Francisco, going up 3-0 in the second inning and adding five runs in the fifth inning alone.
The Mets opened their next series Tuesday with a 4-3 win over Arizona in 10 innings, with the second matchup between both teams scheduled for Wednesday at 4:10 p.m. ET.
