Mikel Arteta and Arsenal have been dealt another setback during the international break, with Martin Zubimendi forced to leave Spain’s national team camp.

As reported by Fabrizio Romano, Zubimendi withdrew due to knee discomfort and will miss Spain’s upcoming friendly against Egypt.

"Arsenal midfielder Martin Zubimendi leaves Spain camp due to knee discomfort, a statement confirms. He won’t play against Egypt."

The decision was made to avoid further risk, with the midfielder now returning to London for assessment.

From an international standpoint, this is a precautionary move by Spain. Zubimendi played a role in their recent setup and remains part of the core group that won the UEFA Euro 2024.

He made four appearances during that tournament and delivered an important contribution off the bench in the final against England, helping Spain control the midfield in the second half.

Spain’s priority remains long-term fitness, especially with the 2026 World Cup ahead in a little over two months. Pulling Zubimendi out early ensures the issue does not escalate into something more serious.

For Arsenal, the issue runs deeper. Zubimendi has been a key figure in Arteta’s midfield this season, registering six goals and three assists in 44 appearances across all competitions. His absence adds to a growing list of players dealing with fitness issues during this break.

The timing could not be worse. Arsenal are entering the most critical stretch of their season. They face Southampton in the FA Cup quarterfinals, followed by the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal against Sporting.

After that, they return to league action holding a nine-point lead over Manchester City, who have a game in hand and face Arsenal within the next three weeks.

There is also a mental factor. Arsenal lost 2-0 to City in the EFL Cup final with a flat performance. With back-to-back-to-back second-place finishes in the last three seasons and past collapses in title races, any injury adds pressure.

For now, both Spain and Arsenal wait. If it is a minor issue, it is good news for both. If not, Zubimendi’s World Cup hopes could also be in jeopardy.
