After the Jacksonville Jaguars offense tore them apart last week, the New England Patriots defense will be tested once again this week against the Buffalo Bills offense. Through the first three weeks, Buffalo’s offense has had both a top-ten passing and running game, making it a huge challenge to defend.
During his weekly press conference, Mike Vrabel addressed how Buffalo’s well-rounded offense will present a test for his defense on Sunday, starting with quarterback Josh Allen:
Buffalo’s Offensive Engine Starts with Josh Allen
“Josh does a fantastic job of being able to extend plays.”
Josh Allen is the ultimate dual-threat under center. Not only can he tear apart defenses with his arm, but with his 6’5” frame, he can get outside of the pocket and get huge gains with his legs. Through three games, Allen has 11 total touchdowns (five passing and six rushing) to two interceptions. He will be the main focus of New England’s defense on Sunday.
James Cook
“Once he gets cooking, they’re just tough to stop because then it’s play action, it’s boots; it just makes it tough to stop,” said Vrabel.
As if Josh Allen wasn’t enough of a matchup nightmare, James Cook has emerged as one of the NFL’s best running backs. On the young season, Cook ranks in the top seven in carries (58), rushing yards (346), and touchdowns (2).
Dalton Kincaid
“Kincaid has been fantastic, lately averaging almost 19 yards a catch,” said Vrabel.
When Josh Allen extends plays, his favorite target has been his tight end. Aside from his insane yards per catch, Kincaid has also been very efficient, reeling in 14 of his 17 targets.
Underrated Offensive Line
None of these elite playmakers would be able to produce consistently without a stout offensive line, and Mike Vrabel made sure to point that out during his press conference as well.
“I think the line is certainly a very underrated part of what they do. It’s been a very consistent unit. One that knows how to block for not only the running back, but also for the quarterback,” said Vrabel.
With star players in the backfield, an offensive line that blocks for them, and an elite pass catcher, New England’s defense will have its hands full on Sunday in Buffalo.
