On the heels of a frustrating Week 1 loss in Seattle, the Patriots have begun preparation for their home opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers, who began the season with a 20-13 victory over the Atlanta Falcons.

Earlier this afternoon, Vrabel met with the media and answered questions regarding Sunday’s matchup, in which he addressed Aaron Rodgers and his ability to dissect defenses especially at the line of scrimmage.

“The risk outweighs the benefits where you’re trying to disguise and show one thing or show a coverage, but you’re ultimately out of position. He’s seen every look that you can possibly give him,” said Vrabel.

Vrabel, who has recorded a sack on Rodgers and coached against him, has the utmost respect for the quarterback. He also knows that if his defense is not locked in on Sunday, it will be shredded apart.

How Rodgers Tests New England

In his 22nd year, Rodgers’ MVP days are over, and he has lost a step. Instead, as evidenced by his Week 1 performance, he likes to spread the ball around.

During his matchup against the Falcons, five of his receivers recorded five or more targets, including both of his running backs, Jaylen Warren and Rico Dowdle. However, none of them was his leading receiver, Michael Pittman Jr., who caught all three passes thrown his way for 58 yards.

Zack Kuhr will need to make sure that his unit’s communication is on point, just like last week against Seattle. And that will start with his No. 1 cornerback, Christian Gonzalez, dominating whoever is lined up across from him.

Putting Pressure on the Patriots Offense

The best way for New England to win the game is to make sure Rodgers is not on the field. That means the defense needs to win on third down and not give Rodgers, who is usually mistake-free, any extra chances.

If Drake Maye and the offense can win the time of possession by establishing the run and sustaining long scoring drives, they will put the Patriots in a great position to win their home opener and avenge their turnover-happy loss last season.

For New England to bounce back and secure a home-opener victory, the defense must prevent Rodgers from getting comfortable and into a rhythm. The key to moving to 1-1 on the young season rests on turning respect for Aaron Rodgers into a defensive game plan sharp enough to outsmart the future Hall of Famer.
