The New England Patriots are coming off a run to Super Bowl LX, and expectations are understandably high as Mike Vrabel's team prepares for another shot at representing the AFC.
One player who figures to be central to those plans is Christian Gonzalez.
The star cornerback has developed into one of the most important pieces of New England's defense since the Patriots selected him with the No. 17 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. With the 2026 regular season approaching, Vrabel was asked whether Gonzalez would be available for Week 1.
His response offered a straightforward update on where things stand.
Mike Vrabel Addresses Christian Gonzalez's Week 1 Availability
Vrabel addressed Gonzalez's status during an appearance on "The Greg Hill Show."
"My expectation is that everybody that's healthy, that's ready to play for us, is gonna play," Vrabel said. "I've never even considered anything other than that."
The comments were shared Friday by Carlos A. Lopez.
Vrabel didn't guarantee Gonzalez's availability regardless of his condition. Instead, the Patriots coach made his expectation clear: if Gonzalez is healthy and ready, New England plans to have him on the field.
That's an important distinction as the Patriots navigate the remainder of the preseason and attempt to get their key players ready without creating unnecessary risk.
Gonzalez Remains Crucial to Patriots' Defense
Gonzalez appeared in 17 regular-season games during the 2025 season and recorded 69 total tackles, including 54 solo tackles, along with 10 passes defended.
He then played a role throughout New England's postseason run.
The Patriots defeated the Los Angeles Chargers, Houston Texans and Denver Broncos to capture the AFC championship before falling 29-13 to the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl LX.
Gonzalez recorded nine tackles in the divisional-round victory over Houston and added six tackles and a sack against Denver in the AFC Championship Game.
His importance extends beyond the box score.
At 6-foot-1 and 205 pounds, Gonzalez gives New England a cornerback capable of matching up with some of the NFL's most dangerous receivers. That ability will be particularly valuable as Vrabel attempts to build upon the Patriots' breakthrough 2025 campaign.
New England also has significant expectations for its secondary, with Gonzalez joined by players including Carlton Davis III, Marcus Jones and veteran safety Kevin Byard.
For now, Vrabel isn't presenting Gonzalez's Week 1 status as something requiring a dramatic change in plans.
If the Patriots' top cornerback is healthy when the regular season arrives, Vrabel expects him to play.
