Mike McCarthy's Steelers Changes Earn Bold Super Bowl Praise From Merril Hoge

If there's one thing the Pittsburgh Steelers have long prided themselves on, it's stability. That stability comes with trade-offs, however. Some might view it as an unwillingness to embrace change. This offseason, though, the Steelers had little choice but to undergo sweeping changes. The retirement of their longtime head coach after 19 seasons opened the door for Mike McCarthy to become just the fourth Steelers head coach since 1969. His arrival has already made an impact throughout the organization, and even former Steelers running back Merril Hoge has taken notice. In fact, Hoge has gone as far as to say he's watching a Super Bowl-winning regime take shape.

Hoge discussed the changes with NFL analyst Trey Wingo, where he made the bold declaration.

“I think all the things that are being implemented and planted are just fundamental, foundational pillars that are going to develop. They’re gonna bring a seventh Super Bowl to the Steelers,” Hoge said. “It’s a different energy. A better energy that was needed ... and McCarthy has brought that.”

Energy truly different? Or simply being viewed through the lens of change?

Change can be a good thing, even if many people naturally resist it. While the Steelers remained competitive over the past 19 seasons, they haven't been legitimate Super Bowl contenders in years. Each postseason, the storyline became all too familiar: Pittsburgh getting blown out in a one-and-done playoff appearance. Although Hoge senses a different energy, nothing guarantees this team will take a step forward. Right now, the biggest difference is simply that change has arrived.

That isn't necessarily a bad thing. McCarthy's approach will differ from what the Steelers have experienced for at least the past decade. He also brings extensive experience on the offensive side of the ball and a proven track record of developing quarterbacks. Change will be noticeable. The bigger question is whether that new energy will translate into different results. After all, McCarthy's homecoming comes with a significant historical hurdle.

Can McCarthy Make Super Bowl History With the Steelers?

Multiple local insiders and reporters have highlighted McCarthy's different approach since taking over. According to those reports, he has brought not only a renewed energy but also a heightened attention to detail. History, however, presents a challenge. No head coach has ever won a Super Bowl with two different franchises. Plenty have won championships as assistants before later winning one as a head coach elsewhere, but no one has accomplished the feat as the head coach of two separate organizations.

McCarthy inherits what is, by most accounts, a playoff-caliber roster. Unlike his previous two coaching stops, he takes over a team with talent on both sides of the ball. The offense and defense still have areas that need improvement, but the cupboard is far from bare. McCarthy also reunites with longtime quarterback Aaron Rodgers, with whom he won a Super Bowl in Green Bay.

Hoge believes McCarthy has assembled a Super Bowl-caliber regime, and time will tell whether that prediction proves accurate. McCarthy now needs to get the roster to buy in and execute his vision. If he can, it could make for an exciting 2026 season, and perhaps much more beyond that.
