The Pittsburgh Steelers are in their second week of training camp, and head coach Mike McCarthy has already made several changes to the way the team operates. The Steelers have embraced new priorities on both sides of the ball under the new regime, with McCarthy placing a particular emphasis on situational football. On Tuesday, McCarthy made one thing clear: he wasn't pleased with last week's red-zone performance, and the issue carried over into this week.
Speaking to the media before practice, Alan Saunders of Steelers Now reported that McCarthy expects much more from his team.
“Mike McCarthy said today's Steelers practice will focus on the red zone. ‘We need to take a big step forward. It needs to be a lot cleaner today.’” Saunders reported on X.
Steelers must keep positive trend going in the red zone

The Steelers ranked 11th in red-zone conversion rate in 2025 after finishing 29th in 2024. That improvement helps explain how Pittsburgh won its division last season after falling short in 2024. Maintaining that upward trend will be critical if this offense is going to reach its full potential.
In today's NFL, consistently settling for field goals instead of touchdowns isn't a recipe for sustained success, even if the Steelers managed to win plenty of games that way.
The Steelers are also counting on one of their "Steelers Six" fundamentals, creating big plays, to generate more red-zone opportunities. If they can't finish those drives with touchdowns, however, it will limit the offense's ceiling. McCarthy's approach centers on attention to detail and turning those opportunities into an efficient, productive offense.
McCarthy hammering situational football

McCarthy emphasized situational football throughout the first week of training camp. His renewed focus on red-zone execution makes it clear he wasn't satisfied with the team's early performance. Rather than simply addressing it with players and the media, he adjusted the practice plan to attack the issue directly. That's exactly why the Steelers hired him.
McCarthy's biggest expectation from Steelers ownership and fans is to build a capable, consistent offense. Red-zone efficiency on both sides of the ball will play a major role in accomplishing that goal. By challenging his offense to execute at a higher level, he also pushes the defense to improve. It's all part of McCarthy's vision for building a more complete football team.
