When the Pittsburgh Steelers hired head coach Mike McCarthy, the move felt long overdue. Questions remain about whether the organization made enough changes, but one thing is clear: the Steelers want a more competent and productive offense. That shift benefits not only veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers but also several players in need of a fresh start. McCarthy has already provided that opportunity for players such as running back Kaleb Johnson, and the same could be true for young wide receiver Roman Wilson.

Wilson has remained somewhat of a mystery since returning from an injury-plagued rookie season. He has flashed his potential at times, but he found himself in the coaching staff's doghouse too often. The situation became so dire that the Steelers turned to aging veterans like Adam Thielen and Marquez Valdes-Scantling for help. With McCarthy's preference for a functional, vertical passing attack, however, Wilson could work his way back into the Steelers' long-term plans.

Wilson's Raw Talent and High Potential

Wilson entered the NFL out of Michigan with two standout traits: excellent acceleration off the line of scrimmage and reliable hands. While he doesn't have after burner, elite top-end speed, he possesses more than enough to threaten defenses. His biggest developmental areas remain route running and creating separation against press coverage. In college, his speed often gave him enough room to win early in routes. In the NFL, however, cornerbacks are faster, stronger, and far more effective at disrupting receivers at the line of scrimmage.

Unfortunately, former offensive coordinator Arthur Smith never seemed to maximize Wilson's skill set. Too often, Wilson served as a decoy rather than a featured option in the passing game. Yet when he did get the ball in his hands, he generally made plays. Between Smith's usage and Wilson's inability to consistently develop chemistry with Rodgers, his opportunities became increasingly limited.

How Wilson Can Excel in the New Steelers Offense

McCarthy's vertical offense could bring out the best in Wilson. The scheme can capitalize on his acceleration off the line while creating opportunities for him to attack downfield. In addition, wide receivers coach Adam Henry should help refine Wilson's releases and line-of-scrimmage techniques. Henry has previously coached receivers such as Odell Beckham Jr., Jarvis Landry, and CeeDee Lamb. Wilson may not possess the same ceiling as those players, but he has the potential to develop into a reliable WR2 or WR3 who commands respect from opposing defenses.

Ultimately, Wilson's future depends on his own development. He must continue refining the details of his game, build stronger chemistry with Rodgers, and earn the trust of the new coaching staff. McCarthy's offense can put him in position to succeed, but Wilson must capitalize on those opportunities. If he continues to work and develop, he could force his way back into the Steelers' long-term plans.
