Mike Locksley won’t get the chance to turn Maryland’s 2026 season around, but it doesn’t sound like he’s that upset about being shown the door.
Locksley became the head coach of the Terrapins in 2019. After some rough seasons in the Big Ten, he led the program to three straight bowl wins from 2021-2023. The reality though is his team has been on a sharp decline since that stretch, winning just 10 out of their last 31 games.
Maryland ultimately dismissed Locksley from his role on Wednesday morning.
“Following thoughtful conversations with Coach Locksley, we agreed that a coaching change was in the best interest of Coach Locksley and the Maryland football program,” said Maryland athletic director Jim Smith. “On behalf of the University of Maryland, I want to thank Michael for his dedication to our football program and the genuine care he showed our student-athletes. Michael represented Maryland with pride, strengthened our connection throughout the state and the region, and made a lasting impact on the young men he coached. We are grateful to Michael, Kia, and his family for everything they have contributed to our university.”

Locksley spoke to ESPN about Maryland’s decision to fire him mid-season.
“To be honest I kind of knew it was coming, just didn’t know when,” Locksley told ESPN. “I’m not mad about leaving. I’m not. I’m at peace with it because I know it’s better than what it was when I got here. A player died right before I got here and this place was burnt to the ground. Stabilized it, went to three bowls, NIL kicks in, and wasn’t prepared for it..”
What’s next for Mike Locksley?
Locksley insisted that he’s “done with the heavy laboring” that comes with being a head coach.
Even though Locksley won’t be leading a college program anytime soon, he’s not opposed to joining a team that he can “win a championship at.” He’s also willing to coach in the NFL in some capacity.
Prior to taking over Maryland’s program in 2019, Locksley coached at Alabama, New Mexico, Illinois and Florida among other schools. We’ll see if he lands on his feet before the end of the 2026 season.
