Mike Florio didn’t need a paragraph to make his point about Cam Ward. In Pro Football Talk’s Week 4 power rankings, where the Tennessee Titans dropped from 29th to 31st, Florio summed up the second-year quarterback in one sentence: “If Cam Ward is the real deal, he needs to start showing it real soon.”
That’s the whole blurb, and it lands after a 12-7 loss to the New York Giants that ended with Ward throwing an interception in the end zone in the final seconds. The Titans had first-and-goal inside the 10 with two timeouts when Ward rolled left and forced a throw to Elic Ayomanor that safety Jevon Holland picked off. “He’s out in the open field, just be smarter with the football,” head coach Robert Saleh said afterward. “We’ve got two timeouts left, it’s first and goal on the 8. We’re gonna score, you don’t need to force it in that situation.”
The numbers behind Florio’s take
Ward finished 23 of 36 for 181 yards with a touchdown pass and the interception. Through three games, he has 504 passing yards, two touchdown passes and two rushing touchdowns, and he hasn’t reached 200 yards in any of them. Tennessee has scored 37 points total in losses to the New York Jets, Philadelphia Eagles and Giants, dropping those games by a combined 22 points. Add a 3-14 rookie season and Ward is 3-17 in his 20 career starts.
The Titans aren’t wavering publicly. Saleh called the interception a bad decision but said “Cam is far from reckless,” per Pro Football Talk, and he has said he hasn’t considered benching the 2025 No. 1 overall pick. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that Ward’s job isn’t in immediate danger. “Accuracy and decision-making are issues, but the Titans hope he will build off the late-game growing pains,” Fowler wrote. That’s patience with an expiration date, and Florio is pointing at the calendar.
The next test won’t be easy. Tennessee visits the Baltimore Ravens at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday, Oct. 4, on CBS. A fourth straight loss with another quiet day from Ward would make “real soon” feel a lot closer than it did this week.
