But while losing a future Hall of Fame-caliber receiver is never easy, the question facing Tampa Bay is not whether Evans was great. The question is whether the Buccaneers could build a more balanced offense by investing in younger players.
The stable of current wide receivers on the team along with a balanced running game could help make the Bucs transition into a new era.
Bucs have built impressive WR depth

Emeka Egbukashowed right away at the start of last season why the Bucs wanted him. He can be a lethal presence on the field and definitely has big-play potential. Like many young players, he will need to continue developing his consistency, but his talent and potential give Tampa Bay reason for optimism.
Chris Godwin may not have the pass-catching ability of the great Mike Evans, but if he remains healthy, he can bring back the reliability and timely receptions he has been known for. He can also be a steady veteran presence for the younger wide receivers who may be ready to take the next step.
Jalen McMillan when he has been on the field has shown flashes of why Tampa Bay drafted him. His biggest obstacle is not talent, but rather staying healthy. McMillan doesn't need to duplicate Evans' career. He needs to become a reliable outside receiver who can win contested catches and make big plays.
A Bucky Irving resurgence would help

There are other pieces of the puzzle that need to fit for the receiving corps to reach its potential, but a balanced running attack can help that as well. Bucky Irving will need to recapture some of the magic he showed in 2024 and put last year behind him. The addition of Kenneth Gainwell could lighten the load for Irving as well as give Mayfield another receiving option out of the backfield.
The Bucs will probably not be highly successful if the running game is limited and they are faced with third and long almost every set of downs. However, if the running back duo can chip away yards and keep third downs manageable, there is a high probability the receivers can exceed expectations.
Mike Evans will always be remembered as one of the greatest Buccaneers in franchise history. But successful organizations must sometimes make difficult decisions before decline arrives. If Tampa Bay's young receivers develop and the running game improves, the loss of Evans may not represent the end of an era, rather it may represent the beginning of a new one.
