For many years, when you thought of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Mike Evans was likely the first name that came to mind.
Evans was drafted by the Buccaneers in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft. The big wide receiver ended up becoming one of the best wide receivers of his generation and one of the best Buccaneers of all time.
That’s why it was so surprising to see Evans leave for the San Francisco 49ers this offseason. It had just been assumed that Evans would be a Buccaneer for his entire career, but the future Hall of Famer decided to head to California to rejuvenate his career instead.
Now, as the 49ers look like the best team in the league, Evans has revealed why he decided to leave Tampa Bay.
Evans Says 49ers Have ‘Rejuvenated’ His Career

Evans has wasted no time adjusting to his new team. The receiver has been the WR1 for the 49ers this season, leading the team with 24 catches for 326 yards The 49ers are 5-0 and seem prepared to make a run in the postseason.
Speaking with the Tampa Bay Times’ Rick Stroud, Evans provided some insight into his thought process this offseason.
“This team rejuvenated me and probably added a few more years to my career,” Evans said, per Rick Stroud. “They had everything I needed and checked every box. They’re trying to win now. The quarterback, great skill players, great defense, great coaching staff, and lastly, a great organization.”
It’s not surprising that Evans feels this way. They say winning cures all, so it makes sense that Evans feels rejuvenated.
It’s interesting that Evans mentioned that the 49ers are “trying to win now.” That seemingly implies the veteran didn’t think the Bucs were in a great position entering 2026. Of course, that’s turned out to be true, as the Bucs have just one win through Week 6.
Evans didn’t mention the Bucs in his comments, but it’s clear he was unhappy with how the team was trending. Evans won a Super Bowl and earned six Pro Bowl selections, so it’s not like he had anything left to prove in Tampa Bay. At this point in his career, Evans simply isn’t interested in non-competitive football.
