Emeka Egbuka had a strong rookie season last year. Now, with Mike Evans in San Francisco, the passing game could very well be focused around him.
Bleacher Report writer Moe Moton recently named Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Emeka Egbuka one of five second-year wide receivers primed for a breakout season in 2026.
The publication made a bold prediction about the former first-round pick's future, writing, "Mike Evans' departure opens the door for Emeka Egbuka to reach stardom in 2026. Evans saw at least 109 targets in 11 of 12 seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers—last year was the exception, as he missed nine games. Without him, a new target leader will emerge in the Buccaneers' aerial attack.”
Moton believes Egbuka is now in a position to be that new leader.
It's difficult to disagree with that assessment.
Egbuka can develop into a top receiver
Replacing a player of Mike Evans' caliber is no easy task. Evans leaves behind one of the greatest careers in franchise history and has been one of the NFL's most consistent wide receivers for more than a decade. Fortunately for the Buccaneers, they won't be asking Egbuka to become Mike Evans overnight.
Instead, Tampa Bay simply needs him to continue developing into the player many believed he could become when he entered the NFL.
Egbuka possesses many of the qualities teams look for in a modern wide receiver. He's a good route runner, has reliable hands, and is capable of making plays down the field. More importantly, he'll be catching passes from Baker Mayfield in an offense that has consistently put up impressive numbers over the past several seasons.
Opportunity is the missing piece

Opportunity also matters in the NFL. With Evans no longer occupying a significant portion of the team's targets, Egbuka is positioned to take on a much larger role in 2026.
The Buccaneers have assembled one of the league's most talented offenses, and another year of development could help Egbuka become one of its most important pieces.
Bleacher Report may have gone as far as predicting stardom, but there's little question that all the ingredients are in place for Egbuka to enjoy a breakout season. If he takes the expected second-year leap, Buccaneers fans could soon be watching one of the NFL's rising young receivers.
