Mikaela Shiffrin's struggles and successes have been covered as much as nearly every athlete at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
The 30-year-old U.S. alpine skier had an up-and-down 2022 Winter Olympics and 2026 Winter Olympics. She capped things off well, though, earning a gold medal in the slalom at the 2026 Games in Italy. Shiffrin now has three gold medals and one silver medal at the Winter Olympics.
Washington Post writer Barry Svrluga has covered Shiffrin as much as any journalist. Svrluga was in attendance at the 2026 Winter Games in Italy. It will be his final assignment at the Washington Post, as the once-famed outlet is gutting its entire sports section.

Shiffrin made a point to single out Svrluga's coverage over the years, as he's exiting the Washington Post.
