A "beloved" college football mascot has tragically died at 11 years old.
Michigan State announced that its beloved dog mascot, Zeke - a.k.a. Buckshot - has passed away. He was 11 years old.
"It is with heavy hearts that we share that Buckshot - known to the Michigan State community as Zeke the Wonderdog for the last decade - passed away peacefully this weekend surrounded by his family," the school announced.
"Since 2016, he served as Zeke IV at Michigan State University, bringing joy to campus and upholding one of the university’s most cherished traditions."
Zeke was a beloved attraction at sporting events, school ceremonies and more.
"The Michigan State community is mourning the loss of a frisbee-catching star who energized countless athletic, community, and student events. More than a performer, Zeke IV was a symbol of Spartan spirit and a goodwill ambassador whose soaring catches and enthusiastic presence became a staple of game days and special occasions across campus."
Michigan State has announced that there will be a Zeke V.
"While the Spartan community grieves this loss, the Zeke the Wonderdog tradition will continue. The Foley family has shared that Zeke V will carry the frisbee next, with plans underway to introduce the next Wonderdog to fans in the near future. In time, a new chapter will begin across Michigan State’s campus – built on the same joy, discipline, and love that defined Buckshot’s run as Zeke the Wonderdog," the school announced.
"Though his time felt far too short, Zeke IV lived fully and made a lasting impact on the Michigan State community. Spartan Nation will remember him not just as a frisbee-catching star, but as family."
Our thoughts are with Zeke IV's friends and family members.
May he rest in peace.
