As both a Miami sports legend and Troy Aikman's go-to guy for a decade in Dallas, Hall of Fame wide receiver Michael Irvin must have been over the moon to learn that Aikman was getting a front office job with the Miami Dolphins. But his reaction to Aikman's role with the team was a little different.

Appearing on the DLLS Cowboys podcast, Irvin admitted that it "pains" him to see Aikman working for the Dolphins and not for his beloved Cowboys. He pointed out that Aikman has always wanted a chance to contribute in the front office of the team he returned to greatness like John Elway got with the Denver Broncos, but he simply doesn't see that happening.

“It does pain me to see that,” Irvin said. “I mean, I think it’s criminal for any club not to try to just glean as much as you can from a guy like Troy Aikman.”

“Troy wanted a John Elway situation here in Dallas. And I know he wanted it, and certainly he’s earned it. But it’s not going to happen.”

No sharing glory

By all accounts the reason that the Cowboys have never tried to pick Aikman's brain is that team owner Jerry Jones doesn't want outside opinions telling him how to run his football team.

Aikman has stated publicly that Jones has never reached out to him for any coaching vacancies or personnel moves in recent years.

Whether or not Aikman's role as a consultant to the Miami Dolphins will help that team reach the promised land or not, they at least got the input of someone who has been itching for a chance to contribute to an NFL team and has a large amount of experience to lean on in identifying people to work with.

As for Jones, he's been running the team his way for decades (for better or worse) and seems intent on continuing that into his twilight years.
