College football’s quarterback market has changed dramatically in just a few years, with elite programs now investing millions of dollars in NIL deals to secure the best signal-callers available through the transfer portal.
With the 2026 season entering its Week 0 slate on Saturday, those financial commitments will start to prove right or wrong quickly, particularly for contenders hoping a veteran quarterback can elevate them into the College Football Playoff race.
Miami is one of those programs after making another splash at the position during the offseason as the Hurricanes landed former Duke standout QB Darian Mensah in late January.

According to On3’s Pete Nakos, Miami’s Mensah sits atop the college football quarterback market with a confirmed NIL valuation of $6.5 million for the 2026 season.
That figure makes Mensah the highest-paid athlete across college sports and, by extension, the highest-paid quarterback in the sport ahead of the new campaign.
Nakos reported that Mensah’s agreement is worth more than $6 million with incentives included, a significant increase from the reported $4 million he earned while playing at Duke.
“Duke quarterback Darian Mensah entered the transfer portal on the final day of the January transfer window,” Nakos wrote. “What followed was a legal battle between Mensah and the Blue Devils that ended in a settlement agreement, and the former Tulane transfer is at his third school in Miami. His deal calls for more than $6 million, sources tell On3, but that includes incentives.”
The ranking places Mensah ahead of Oregon quarterback Dante Moore and Ole Miss transfer Trinidad Chambliss, who were both reported at $5 million, while Arizona State’s Sam Leavitt and Indiana’s Josh Hoover each came in at $4.5 million.

Mensah arrived at Miami after a turbulent offseason, as he originally planned to remain at Duke. Ultimately, he transferred to Miami with two seasons of eligibility remaining.
The quarterback is coming off a standout campaign in which he threw for 3,973 yards, 34 touchdowns and six interceptions while leading Duke to an ACC championship.
