The Miami Dolphins will enter Sunday, September 27, against the Kansas City Chiefs without wide receiver Caleb Douglas, removing a player who has posted seven catches for 113 yards through two games. Head coach Jeff Hafley said wide receivers Ryan Miller (foot/back) and Chris Bell (knee) are expected to be available, but the absence still forces quarterback Malik Willis to work with a reshaped group of targets.
Locked On Dolphins host Kyle Crabbs identified Miller, Bell, fellow wide receivers Kevin Coleman Jr. and Jalen Tolbert as the most logical candidates for expanded work. Miller supplied a 77-yard touchdown in Week 2, while Tolbert has been inactive for the first two games. Crabbs also suggested the staff could simplify Coleman’s responsibilities rather than ask the rookie to handle every receiver spot and concept at once.
That decision would affect more than the snap distribution. Douglas’ absence requires Miami to determine which replacements can handle specific route assignments, communicate cleanly before the snap, and give Willis dependable answers against a defense that can punish hesitation. Hafley acknowledged that the personnel change will prompt some adjustments, even if the offense’s overall structure remains similar.
The receiving shuffle arrives while the offense continues to address protection issues. Offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik said he put tackle Austin Jackson in too many unwanted one-on-one situations late in the loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, then credited the entire line with a better performance the following week. Miami needs both cleaner protection and clearer receiver execution to avoid placing more strain on Willis in the home opener.
Douglas’ injury does not create a single obvious replacement. It creates an immediate test of how well the Dolphins can pair Miller’s availability, Bell’s return, Coleman’s development, and a possible Tolbert activation with the roles their quarterback needs most.
Sunday will show whether Miami can turn a thinner receiver rotation into defined, functional roles quickly enough to support Willis and keep its offense on schedule against Kansas City.
