Mets Reveal Reason Behind Freddy Peralta’s Scratched Start

The New York Mets scratched Freddy Peralta from his scheduled start against the Miami Marlins on Friday, a move tied to growing trade deadline interest rather than any health concern. With the Monday deadline approaching, the club is protecting one of its most valuable trade assets as negotiations continue.

Unlike the Detroit Tigers, who scratched Casey Mize after he had already established strong trade value, the Mets appear to be preserving Peralta as contenders continue evaluating his upside despite an inconsistent season.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported on X that the Mets pulled Peralta from Friday's scheduled outing as trade discussions intensified ahead of Monday's deadline. The decision removes any unnecessary injury risk while clubs continue exploring deals for the veteran right-hander.

Peralta has endured an uneven first season in New York, but his strikeout ability continues to attract interest around the league. Several contenders reportedly view him as a pitcher who could thrive with adjustments under a new coaching staff, making him one of the more intriguing arms available before the deadline.

The Mets, meanwhile, have little reason to take chances. Sitting at 47-63 and 17.5 games behind the Atlanta Braves in the National League East, New York has shifted into seller mode as it looks to build toward 2027.

Peralta has made 22 starts this season, posting a 5-9 record with a 4.99 ERA across 113.2 innings. He has recorded 113 strikeouts while holding opponents to a .264 batting average, though his 48 walks have contributed to a 1.48 WHIP.

The timing of the scratch also highlights how differently clubs handle trade deadline strategy. Detroit protected Mize after he had already maximized his value, while the Mets are safeguarding Peralta as interested teams weigh the potential of unlocking his swing-and-miss arsenal.

If a deal is completed before Monday's deadline, Friday's scratch could mark Peralta's final move as a member of the Mets.
