The New York Mets have been one of the biggest disappointments throughout the 2026 MLB season. Going into Monday's matchup against the Chicago Cubs, they are 34-43 and six games back from a wild card spot.
What makes their struggles especially discouraging is their offseason additions. Not only did the Mets bring in shortstop Bo Bichette on a three-year, $126 million deal, but they also traded for Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Freddy Peralta.
The two-time All-Star had carved out an impressive resume in Milwaukee. Over eight years, he tossed 931 innings and produced a 3.59 ERA. When acquired, there were high expectations for Peralta to lead the Mets' starting rotation.

However, he's emerged as a serious trade candidate due to New York's shortcomings this season. During an appearance on "Foul Territory," USA Today's Bob Nightengale suggested the team may not have much of a choice but to move on from the 30-year-old.
“I think they're going to have no choice but to trade Peralta, and I’m not sure what you’re going to get,” Nightengale said. “I mean, he’s a front-line starter, but he’s also a starter who’s only going to give you six innings max, a lot of nights five.”
In 16 starts this season, the right-hander has tossed 85.2 innings, producing a 4.83 ERA, 85 ERA+, 1.389 WHIP and 0.2 WAR. Despite a dip in production with the Mets, Peralta's past success still makes him an intriguing trade target.
However, barring an extension, he is only a short-term option. Peralta is set to hit free agency after the season, with Nightengale previously reporting that Peralta is seeking a deal similar to Max Fried's eight-year, $218 million contract with the New York Yankees.
With the trade deadline set for Aug. 3, he is a name worth monitoring. If the Mets continue to fall further behind in the standings, Peralta may have a new home in the next few months.
