The New York Mets will not be looking for a new manager, as they already have their guy.

On Tuesday, interim manager Andy Green agreed to a three-year contract to remain the Mets’ manager beyond 2026. Green had served as the Mets’ senior vice president of player development since 2024, but took over as manager after Carlos Mendoza was fired on June 26.

This was a surprising development, as Green previously insisted on returning to his front office role after the 2026 campaign. But with the Mets going 31-28 since the All-Star break under Green (entering Tuesday’s action) and the clubhouse gravitating towards him, the 49-year-old seemingly had a change of heart and agreed to have the interim tag removed.

“When I accepted the interim role, I didn’t anticipate it being permanent, but the more time I spent with our players and staff, the clearer it became that this is where my passion and experience could make the greatest impact,” Green said in a statement released from the Mets. “That realization led to many conversations with my family, and together we agreed this is the right opportunity at the right time.

“I believe deeply in what we can build together, and I’m honored to continue serving our players, this organization and the amazing Mets fans.”

Green’s prior experience as a manager came with the San Diego Padres from 2016 to 2019. The Padres went 274–366 during Green’s tenure, which ended with his firing on September 21, 2019. He failed to post a winning record in any of those four seasons, although the Padres were in the middle of a deep rebuild prior to the 2019 season.

At the time Green took over for Mendoza, the Mets were 34-47, in last place in the NL East and on a six-game losing streak. Since then, New York has gone 37-38 and shown improvement in the second half. While Mendoza was popular in the clubhouse, Green was also able to command the respect of his players.

“Andy has connected with and pushed our players to perform, despite the disappointment of the season,” Mets owners Steve Cohen and Alex Cohen said. “Over the last several months he has brought discipline, accountability and positivity to the clubhouse, attributes we were seeking in our next manager.”

After a disappointing campaign punctuated by injuries to Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto, Green will look to right the ship and bring the Mets back to prominence in 2027.
