The New York Mets received encouraging news on closer Devin Williams after he was unavailable during Wednesday night's win over the Cleveland Guardians.
Williams was held out because of right arm fatigue, but he threw before Thursday's game and is available if needed, according to Newsday's Laura Albanese.
Williams did not pitch in the Mets' 6- 5 extra-innings victory over Cleveland on Wednesday. With their closer resting, interim manager Andy Green turned to Daniel Duarte, who worked around the automatic runner in the 10th inning to earn the first save of his 2026 season.
The victory improved New York to 49- 66 as the club continues evaluating its roster following a busy trade deadline. Cleveland dropped to 57- 58 but remains in second place in the American League Central.
Bo Bichette delivered the decisive RBI single in the top of the 10th inning, scoring Francisco Lindor with the winning run. Chayce McDermott also played a key role, tossing two scoreless innings in relief to earn the first victory of his major league career.

Williams has appeared in 41 games this season, posting a 4.30 ERA with 16 saves in 19 opportunities. Across 44 innings, he has struck out 58 batters while issuing 23 walks.
The Mets avoided a larger concern after Williams showed no lingering issues during his throwing session Thursday. His availability gives New York its primary late-inning option back after one game without him.
Green's decision to rest Williams appears to have been precautionary rather than injury-related, allowing the veteran closer to return to high-leverage duty as the Mets continue their series.
