The New York Mets made one of the biggest moves of any MLB team this offseason, trading for starting pitcher Freddy Peralta from the Milwaukee Brewers. The Mets hope the transaction gives them an ace at the beginning of the rotation, something they struggled with last year.
It's a role Kodai Senga was expected to already fill, but after making an All-Star Game appearance in his first season with the Mets in 2023 has yet to see much improvement.
Peralta could be the team's solution, though. The 29-year-old started 33 games, posting a 2.70 ERA, 1.075 WHIP, and 204 strikeouts for the Milwaukee Brewers in 2025. That resulted in his second career All-Star nod and finishing fifth in NL Cy Young voting.

The Mets are just the second team Peralta will play for, spending all eight of his previous seasons with the Brewers. However, his time in New York may be short-lived. He is set to hit free agency after the 2026 season.
While there has been speculation of a potential extension ever since being acquired, he and the Mets have yet to make anything official. During a Wednesday appearance on "Foul Territory," Peralta was asked about a new deal, keeping the answer short.
"I have no comment," Peralta said.
The starting pitcher has shown commitment to his new team. Peralta previously opted out of representing the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic to instead get better situated with his new team.
While an extension is not out of the question, he remains focused on his first season with the Mets. The pressure is certainly on with manager Carlos Mendoza already naming Peralta the starter for New York's opening day matchup against the Pittsburgh Pirates on March 26.
