The New York Mets have yet to make meaningful progress toward a contract extension with right-hander Clay Holmes, creating more uncertainty around one of the club's top pitchers ahead of Friday night's series opener against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
With the July trade deadline approaching, Holmes remains one of the Mets' most intriguing storylines as he nears a return from the injured list while his long-term future remains unresolved.
According to Chelsea Janes of The Washington Post, Holmes said there has not been much movement in extension talks, adding, "I don't think there's been a ton there… there's a few different scenarios, and I think things just have to unfold before we know more."
Holmes is currently completing a rehab assignment after suffering a fractured fibula in May. The veteran threw 2.1 innings for Triple-A Syracuse on Thursday, striking out two while continuing his progression toward a return to New York's rotation.
Before the injury, Holmes had been one of the Mets' most effective starters. Across nine starts, the right-hander posted a 4-4 record with a 2.39 ERA while striking out 45 batters over 52.2 innings, establishing himself as one of the club's most reliable arms.

Friday's comments also arrive at a pivotal point for the organization. Sitting at 43-60 entering the weekend, the Mets face difficult decisions ahead of the trade deadline as they weigh whether to keep veterans or move expiring assets for future value.
Holmes did not rule out remaining in New York but acknowledged there is little clarity surrounding his situation. His recovery continues to trend in the right direction, though whether he returns to the Mets' rotation for the remainder of the season remains one of the club's biggest questions as the deadline draws closer.
