Matt Seelinger's major league debut lasted just one appearance. His stay on the New York Mets’ active roster didn’t last much longer.
The Mets designated the right-hander for assignment on Wednesday, one day after allowing seven runs over two innings and taking the loss in a 16-12 defeat to the Kansas City Royals at Citi Field on Tuesday.
The Mets acquired Seelinger, 31, from the Detroit Tigers on Monday for cash considerations, then selected his contract from Triple-A Syracuse the same day to make room on the 40-man roster, a move triggered by an upward mobility clause in his Tigers contract.

Seelinger, a Long Island native, waited nearly a decade for his first chance to pitch in the majors after bouncing around through the Pirates, Rays, Giants and Phillies systems, plus a stint in the Independent League. He had posted a 3.89 earned run average with 49 strikeouts and 19 walks over 39 1/3 innings at Triple-A Toledo this season before the trade.
Seelinger's DFA came as part of a broader shakeup to New York's pitching staff. The Mets also selected RHP Xzavion Curry to the active roster, recalled RHP Tobias Myers from Triple-A and placed RHP Austin Warren on the 15-day injured list with a right forearm strain.
Seelinger will most likely clear waivers and return to the organization unless he is picked up by another team. If a club takes a flier on his three-pitch mix, headlined by a fastball that touched 95 mph in the minors this season, he could get another shot at the innings he waited so long to pitch.
