Eric Wagaman is heading back to Triple-A Syracuse after the New York Mets activated Luis Robert Jr. from the 60-day injured list ahead of Monday's series opener against the Milwaukee Brewers. The move gives the Mets another healthy outfield option while ending Wagaman's latest stint on the major league roster.
Wagaman had filled a depth role during Robert's lengthy absence but became the odd man out once the former All-Star was cleared to return. The versatile infielder and outfielder will continue getting regular at-bats with Syracuse while remaining available for another call-up later this season.
Robert's activation comes after he completed an eight-game rehab assignment, during which he batted .323 with two home runs. The Mets acquired the 28-year-old from the Chicago White Sox during the offseason and hope he can provide a spark after missing nearly three months with a lumbar disc herniation.
Wagaman's option reflects the roster crunch created by Robert's return rather than his long-term standing within the organization. The Mets have leaned on several young players throughout the season, making it difficult to keep every depth piece on the active roster once veterans return from injury.
Robert struggled before landing on the injured list, batting .224 with two home runs and eight RBIs in 24 games. New York will likely ease him back into regular action as he works to regain his timing at the plate.

The Mets entered the week with a 42-58 record, sitting last in the National League East as they continue evaluating their roster before the trade deadline. Getting Robert back healthy gives the club another experienced bat for the second half.
For Wagaman, the move offers an opportunity to continue playing every day in Triple-A instead of serving in a limited bench role. Strong production with Syracuse could quickly put him back in line for another promotion later this season.
