It’s been a long and winding road for Matt McLain, both on the field and in the fantasy world. Yet, as the “fantasy bust” narrative reaches its peak in 2026, the underlying stats are combatting it.

The Reds’ infielder has been on a very long recovery course since having shoulder surgery in 2024. However, there have been subtle improvements in 2026 that show his underlying contact quality is still there.

What does this mean for fantasy managers in redraft and dynasty leagues? Here’s what owners need to know.

The Approach Data — What the Numbers Actually Say About Where McLain Is in His Recovery

Matt McLain's plate discipline gains provide encouraging evidence of continued post-surgery progress.

Yes, it seems like it’s taking forever for McLain to rebound from that March 2024 surgery. However, managers need to recognize that the typical labrum recovery arc runs 18-24 months for power restoration. And labrum recovery impacts a hitter two different ways: neuromuscular rehab that affects swing decision-making, and muscle strength that drives exit velocity.

With that in mind, McLain is actually making strides toward a return to full strength.

Sure, some of the stats still aren’t great. He’s slashing .202/.305/.351 on the season and FanGraphs shows his BABIP is below the league average at .255. His Statcast profile reveals a season-long 88.8 avg exit velocity, 38.5% hard-hit rate, and 9.9% barrel rate, which are improved from last season but still lacking power.

There is, however, a positive gap between his wOBA (.301) and his xwOBA (.327). His walk rate is up to 11.9% and his whiff rate is down to 26.6%. Since June 1, his walk rate has been a career-high 14.8%, and his season strikeout rate is a career-low 26.2%.

McLain is having better at-bats. The power behind his bat isn’t fully back yet.

The Two Mechanical Facts That Seem Contradictory and Why Both Point to 2027

Matt McLain's increased swing speed supports optimism regarding his longer-term power outlook.

Two mechanical elements uncover McLain’s true recovery timeline. For starters, his swing speed is up, which shows he is generating more force behind his swings.

“McLain's swing speed has notably jumped almost two full miles per hour compared to his previous career-high,” MLB.com noted back in May.

His pop-up rate is also up, which shows he still has pull-side shoulder limitations.

“Batted balls in the air are usually a good thing, especially in the hitter-friendly Great American Ball Park,” the piece continued. “He’s largely hitting balls too high too frequently for it to matter, though. McLain is popping up 10.9% of the time this season, compared to 6.4% in 2023.”

The mechanical facts reveal optimism, but also add to the frustration that fantasy managers have felt this season. McLain's recovery arc is on track, which is demonstrated by his improved swing speed. His stats can improve if he starts hitting the ball harder, but that depends on his movement limitations.

And those limitations could mean McLain doesn’t regain his full power until the 2027 season.

The Fantasy Decision — Hold, Sell, or Buy Based on the Roster Type That Defines the Right Move

So, where does this leave McLain in the greater fantasy baseball scheme? Managers have different decisions to make depending on their league format.

Owners in keeper and dynasty leagues should hold McLain for the future. He’s having an in-between year and is making progress with his surgically-repaired shoulder. His hold value is the highest at the peak of the bust narrative, so selling him now would mean ignoring signs of a 2027 payoff.

Managers in redraft leagues have to think about more immediate production. McLain isn’t playing every day because the Reds have a crowded infield, but that could change if he goes on a heater. If McLain catches a hot streak (he did log a .905 OPS over 14 games earlier in the season) in the second half, he should be sold high to fill an immediate roster hole.

Questions About Matt McLain, Answered

Is Matt McLain a bust in 2026 fantasy baseball?
The “bust” label is premature given the underlying indicators. His walk rate has improved, his whiff rate has declined, and his xwOBA (.327) sits above his wOBA (.301), suggesting better contact quality than his results indicate.

When will Matt McLain's power come back after his shoulder surgery?
The recovery timeline discussed for labrum surgery typically runs 18-24 months before full power returns. The current data suggests his approach metrics are improving before his power production fully rebounds.

What does Matt McLain's xwOBA say about his 2026 performance?
His .327 xwOBA is 26 points higher than his .301 wOBA, indicating that his underlying contact quality has been stronger than his surface production.

Should I hold or sell Matt McLain in a fantasy baseball keeper league?
Keeper and dynasty managers should continue holding him. The combination of improving plate discipline and recovery progress points toward longer-term value that may not be fully reflected in his current perception.

What is Matt McLain's pop-up rate problem in 2026 and why does it matter?
His 10.9% pop-up rate is significantly higher than the 6.4% mark he posted in 2023. That increase suggests lingering limitations in his swing path and power production, which may continue to suppress results until his recovery is complete.
