Martha Reeves is rightfully considered an iconic singer in Detroit, but she's unfortunately trending for the wrong reasons this week.
Reeves, 85, had the honor of performing "The Star-Spangled Banner" at the Women’s Pro Baseball League's inaugural game on Aug. 1. Unfortunately, her performance left a lot to be desired.
In fact, sports fans around the country are claiming Reeves had the worst rendition of the national anthem ever.
"Fergie genuinely might be dethroned after this," one person replied. "Like when I first tuned I could not believe this was happening. And the cuts to the players and audience trying to keep it together was KILLING me."
"Never thought I’d live to see the day Fergie was dethroned but that day may have arrived," a social media user commented.
"I’m crying actual tears laughing especially when they show the crowd and people are trying not to laugh," another person wrote.
"You can literally see the American flag crying," another person joked.
There were issues leading up to the national anthem.
TMZ captured footage of Reeves criticizing one of her backup singers prior to last week's performance.
"That’s out of tune," Reeves said. "Who is singing with me? Who’s singing the same note I’m singing? Why? Backup singers. I don’t think I need them."
Reeves, who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995, didn't blame her backup singers for last Saturday's disaster.
"The field conditions were wet and windy, and without stage monitors I wasn’t able to hear myself as I normally would," she said. "While it wasn’t the performance I had hoped for, I’m grateful to have been there in support of these remarkable athletes and this groundbreaking league."
