The Miami Marlins will be without one of their hottest hitters after placing Kyle Stowers on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain ahead of Tuesday's series opener against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The move comes after Stowers exited Sunday's win over the Los Angeles Angels and forces Miami to lean on recently recalled infielder Graham Pauley as it continues its push to stay above .500.

The Marlins announced the transaction Tuesday, with Stowers landing on the injured list retroactive to Aug. 10 because of a left hamstring strain. Miami also recalled Pauley from Triple-A Jacksonville to fill the open roster spot after his latest stint in the minors.

Stowers suffered the injury during Sunday's 12-3 victory over the Angels. He appeared to tweak his hamstring while running out a two-run single in the fifth inning and was replaced by Leo Jiménez as a pinch-runner before leaving the game. Tests later confirmed the strain, prompting the roster move.

Before the setback, Stowers had been one of Miami's most productive bats. He entered Tuesday batting .242 with 16 home runs, 21 doubles, 52 RBIs and a .789 OPS across 94 games. Over his previous 15 contests, he hit .315/.413/.640 with four home runs and nine RBIs, giving the Marlins a major spark during their recent stretch.

Pauley returns after appearing in 41 major league games this season, batting .190 with one home run and 12 RBIs in 100 at-bats. The versatile left-handed hitter can play multiple infield positions and provides another option as manager Clayton McCullough reshuffles the lineup.

Miami entered Tuesday at 60-59, third in the National League East and trying to remain in the Wild Card conversation. Stowers' absence also leaves the club thinner at first base after trading Liam Hicks before the deadline, increasing the importance of Pauley's latest opportunity.
