The Miami Marlins continued reshaping their pitching depth Monday by claiming right-hander Wikelman González off waivers from the Chicago White Sox. Shortly after making the claim, the club optioned the 24-year-old to Triple-A Jacksonville.

The move comes after Miami extended its winning streak to two games with consecutive victories over the Los Angeles Angels. Rather than adding González directly to the major league bullpen, the Marlins chose to send him to Jacksonville, where he can continue refining his command while remaining in the organization.

González gives Miami another high-upside arm as the club remains in the National League Wild Card race. The Marlins entered Monday at 60-59, sitting third in the NL East and still within striking distance of a postseason berth.

The transaction was first announced by the Marlins on their official X account. The club confirmed that González was claimed off waivers from the White Sox before being optioned to Triple-A Jacksonville, adding another young pitcher to its organizational depth chart.

González originally joined the White Sox organization after being acquired from the Boston Red Sox in the Garrett Crochet trade. Although he struggled at Triple-A Charlotte this season with a 6.57 ERA over 24.2 innings, he continued to miss bats at an impressive rate, posting a 28.6% strikeout rate despite ongoing control issues.

His upside has already been evident at the major league level. During the 2025 season, González recorded a 2.66 ERA with 25 strikeouts in 20.1 innings, flashing the power arsenal that made him an intriguing waiver claim.

By optioning González immediately, Miami can work on improving his command without occupying a spot in the major league bullpen. The organization has emphasized acquiring controllable young pitching, and the right-hander fits that profile.

The White Sox, meanwhile, continue their rebuilding process after designating González for assignment over the weekend. Miami will now hope a change of scenery helps the former top prospect regain the form that made him an effective reliever just one season ago.
