It did not take long for Colt Emerson to make an immediate impact in the major leagues.
In just his second game since being called up by the Seattle Mariners, Emerson's first career hit left the park. The 20-year-old slugged a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to lift Seattle to a 6-1 win over the Chicago White Sox on Monday, ending their three-game losing streak.
Emerson also became the first 20-year-old since Jasson Domínguez of the New York Yankees to homer for their first career hit. Domínguez took future Hall of Famer Justin Verlander deep on September 1, 2023, against the Houston Astros.
The hype and anticipation surrounding Emerson was certainly for real, especially after the Mariners signed the young infielder to an eight-year, $95 million contract extension on March 31. It was the largest contract extension for an MLB player to sign before making his big league debut, surpassing Jackson Chourio of the Milwaukee Brewers, who inked an eight-year, $82 million extension in December 2023.
Seattle called up Emerson after they placed fellow infielder Brendan Donovan on the injured list this past week with a left groin strain. Donovan missed the previous 17 games with the Mariners due to the same injury, which ultimately flared up.
The Mariners are also without their All-Star catcher Cal Raleigh, who landed on the shelf with an oblique strain.
Still, the Mariners have to be very excited about Emerson after he hit his first career long ball, which helped end the ballclub's three-game slide. Seattle continues their series against the White Sox on Tuesday and sits just a game behind the Athletics for first place in the American League West.
