Gavin McKenna knows most first-overall picks join rebuilding teams. The Toronto Maple Leafs rookie believes his situation is very different. After being selected first overall in the 2026 NHL Draft, McKenna is preparing to join a roster built to compete immediately.
Speaking about Toronto's offseason, McKenna praised general manager John Chayka's aggressive approach. He said, "You see what Chayka is doing. You see the players he's bringing in. I think we obviously want to go on a run this year."
McKenna admitted he understands how uncommon his opportunity is.
"So it's very fortunate for me to go to a team like that's hungry and in that winning environment," McKenna said. "It's pretty common that players who get drafted first overall go to a team that's tanking, and that's not the case for me."
The 18-year-old added, "I know I've gotten lucky."
McKenna earned that opportunity after a remarkable draft year. He posted 51 points in 35 NCAA games with Penn State and won Big Ten Freshman of the Year. Before that, he dominated the WHL with Medicine Hat and later recorded 14 points in seven games for Canada at the 2026 World Junior Championship.
Toronto also enters the season with a different outlook after a disappointing 2025-26 campaign. The Maple Leafs missed the playoffs for the first time in a decade before winning the NHL Draft Lottery and picking McKenna. He also added Sergei Bobrovsky, Nick Paul, Brandon Duhaime, Colton Sissons, Teddy Blueger, and Jack Roslovic to strengthen the roster.

McKenna's comments reflect confidence in the organization's direction. Instead of carrying a rebuilding franchise alone, he joins an experienced group led by Auston Matthews.
"We’ve had our conversations, and I’ve asked him for advice. It's called policy. He’s been an open book."
That environment should ease the pressure during his rookie season. McKenna can focus on developing his game while contributing to a team with playoff expectations.
If Toronto's offseason changes deliver the expected results, the first-overall pick could make an immediate impact while chasing both the Calder Trophy and a postseason berth.
