The Toronto Maple Leafs announced concerning news on Monday regarding forward Max Domi ahead of the NHL offseason.
The team confirmed Domi underwent offseason surgery to address an issue he played through during the 2025-26 NHL season, but complications from the procedure have now left him out indefinitely.
In a statement posted on X, Toronto said, "Forward Max Domi underwent offseason surgery to address an issue he played through during the 2025-26 season. Due to complications arising from the procedure, Domi will be out indefinitely.
"Domi will continue working with the club's medical staff and will be re-evaluated at the start of training camp."
The organization did not reveal details surrounding either the original injury or the postoperative complications.
Domi, 31, completed his third season with the Maple Leafs while clearly battling physical limitations. He appeared in 80 games and recorded 12 goals with 24 assists for 36 points. His -29 rating ranked among the worst on the roster during one of the most disappointing seasons in recent franchise history.
Toronto collapsed to a 32-36-14 record and missed the Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time since 2016. The team’s 30-point drop in the standings followed the offseason departure of Mitch Marner and a series of major injuries, including Auston Matthews suffering a season-ending knee injury in March.
Domi’s situation now creates another layer of uncertainty for a franchise already dealing with major organizational changes. New general manager John Chayka inherited a roster lacking depth, defensive stability and secondary scoring consistency.

Even with Domi’s difficult season statistically, Toronto still viewed him as an important piece entering 2026-27 because of his versatility and physical style.
Domi has two years remaining on his four-year, $15 million contract carrying a $3.75 million cap hit.
