The Kansas City Chiefs have been waiting throughout training camp for one of their most important rookies to take the next step toward full participation.
That step finally came Thursday.
Chiefs cornerback Mansoor Delane, who has been working his way back from a shoulder injury, appeared at practice in a full-contact jersey for the first time during training camp. The development comes just days after general manager Brett Veach provided an encouraging timeline for the No. 6 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.
It also arrives after Kansas City delivered a somewhat unexpected message about Delane with its first unofficial depth chart. Despite the significant investment the Chiefs made in the rookie, Delane was listed as a backup entering the preseason.
Now, his return to full-contact work could give him an opportunity to begin changing that.
Mansoor Delane Takes Major Step in Shoulder Injury Recovery
The Kansas City Star's Jesse Newell reported the encouraging development from Chiefs practice Thursday morning.
"Chiefs’ Mansoor Delane (shoulder) in full-contact jersey for first time this camp," Newell reported.
That's a big-time change for Delane.
The rookie had spent training camp wearing a yellow non-contact jersey while recovering from the shoulder injury he suffered near the end of organized team activities. Although Delane was still able to participate in portions of practice, Kansas City had kept him away from contact while allowing the injury additional time to heal.
Veach recently explained the situation during an appearance on SiriusXM NFL Radio.
"Starting first with Mansoor [Delane], he had a shoulder blade right toward the end of OTAs," Veach said. "And so we don’t think it’s going to be long term or anything, but that has to just completely heal."
Veach added that there was otherwise "nothing limiting him" and indicated Delane had continued taking 7-on-7 repetitions while sitting out contact portions of practice.
The general manager projected that Delane could receive clearance for everything within seven or eight days. Thursday's development suggests the rookie has made substantial progress toward that goal.
Chiefs Made Unexpected Mansoor Delane Decision on Depth Chart
Delane's return to a full-contact jersey becomes even more interesting when considering where Kansas City placed him on its unofficial depth chart.
The Chiefs listed the first-round rookie as a backup rather than immediately installing him with the starting defense.
Under normal circumstances, seeing a rookie listed behind a veteran in August wouldn't generate much attention. Delane's situation is different because of how aggressively Kansas City pursued him in the draft.
The Chiefs selected Delane sixth overall after trading up three spots to land the LSU defensive back. That kind of draft capital immediately created significant expectations for his role in Steve Spagnuolo's defense.
His injury, however, prevented him from getting the full complement of training camp repetitions necessary to compete for a starting position.
That could begin changing now.
The 6-foot, 190-pound cornerback was one of the premier defensive back prospects in the 2026 draft class. Kansas City's willingness to move up for him demonstrated how highly the organization valued his potential.
The Chiefs also have significant competition at cornerback, with players including Kristian Fulton, Kaiir Elam, Nohl Williams and others battling for roles in the secondary.
Delane now has an opportunity to make up ground.
Delane's Progress Comes Before Chiefs' Next Preseason Game
The timing couldn't be much better for Kansas City.
The Chiefs are preparing to face the Los Angeles Rams on Saturday, Aug. 15, at Arrowhead Stadium. Whether Delane is cleared for game action remains something to watch, particularly after Kansas City spent most of camp protecting his shoulder from contact.
There is little reason for the Chiefs to rush one of their most valuable young players onto the field for a preseason game if they believe additional recovery time would benefit him.
The bigger objective is having Delane healthy and prepared for the regular season.
Veach had already expressed confidence that the injury wouldn't become a long-term concern. Seeing Delane shed the non-contact jersey provides tangible evidence that his recovery is moving in the right direction.
Kansas City's unofficial depth chart might currently identify Delane as a backup, but that designation doesn't have to last long.
For the first time this training camp, the Chiefs' prized rookie appears ready to get a full opportunity to change it.
