Manny Machado is not ready to accept that the San Diego Padres’ postseason run is over despite falling into a 2-0 hole against the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Division Series.
The Padres suffered a heartbreaking 4-3 walk-off loss in Game 2, with Jackson Chourio delivering the decisive hit after Mason Miller struggled to close out the game in the ninth inning.
The loss prompted former MLB star David Ortiz to rule out the Padres in the series, but Machado clearly is not ready to concede anything with the series heading to San Diego.
San Diego entered the postseason with legitimate expectations after another strong regular season from its veteran core. Machado was once again a major part of that group, finishing the regular season with 30 home runs and 91 RBI.
The Padres now face a difficult situation after dropping the first two games of the series. They will need to win three consecutive games to keep their postseason run alive, but Machado and the rest of the clubhouse still have an opportunity to change the narrative.
Game 2 was particularly painful because San Diego appeared to have a chance to steal the victory before Milwaukee rallied late. Miller issued three walks in the ninth inning before Chourio’s game-winning hit ended the contest.

Despite the disappointing result, Machado’s response reflects the mindset San Diego needs with its season on the line. The Padres cannot afford to dwell on what happened in Milwaukee.
The series now shifts to Petco Park, where San Diego will have the benefit of playing in front of its home crowd. Machado and the Padres will need to respond quickly if they want to prove Ortiz and everyone else who has counted them out wrong.
For now, the Padres remain alive, and Machado is making it clear that the fight is not finished.
