It’s way too early to name a front-runner for the Heisman Trophy, but Miami wide receiver Malachi Toney is proving he belongs in the conversation.
Toney was outstanding in Miami’s season-opening win over Stanford on Friday night. The talented sophomore had a school-record 234 receiving yards on 12 receptions. As if that wasn’t impressive enough, he tied another single-game record for the Hurricanes with three touchdown receptions.
“It means a lot, knowing how many greats played at this university,” Toney said in regards to his record-setting performance.
While there’s still plenty of work to be done this season, Toney has already cemented his status as one of the most popular players in the country.

“This kid is the best player in college football,” Vic Lombardi of Altitude TV said. “Not close.”
“I think he might be the best player in the country,” one fan wrote.
“I seen enough, give him the Heisman Trophy,” a second fan said.
“Oh so this the second coming of Tyreek Hill got it,” another fan commented.
Don’t sleep on another WR.
As always, there’ll be plenty of competition for the Heisman Trophy this season. Heck, we’re not even sure if Toney will win the Biletnikoff Award this fall.
Ohio State superstar Jeremiah Smith started off his junior campaign with eight catches for 151 yards and two touchdowns. Just like Toney did Friday night, he decided to hit the Heisman pose in the end zone.
