Luis Suarez has never been a player afraid to speak his mind, and now the Uruguayan legend has opened up about one of the most talked about coaches in world soccer, Marcelo Bielsa. The former striker shared his thoughts on Bielsa’s famous nickname “El Loco.”
The word translates from Spanish to “The Crazy Man” or “The Mad Man”, a nickname that has followed the legendary coach throughout his career because of his unconventional ideas, intense training methods, and strong soccer philosophy. According to Suarez, the reputation is not something new which Bielsa adopted while coaching the South American side.
“His entire career has been like that,” Suarez said in an exclusive interview with Mundo Deportivo. “You have to accept him as he is; you have to get used to working with him that way. Some agree with it, others don't, but there's a reason he's called that.”
The comments come after Suarez’s International career came to an end following his omission from Uruguay's squad for the 2026 World Cup. Many blamed Bielsa for the forward’s retirement. During his time with the national side, Suarez scored 69 goals in 143 appearances, becoming Uruguay’s all-time top scorer and making the second most appearances after Diego Godin (161).
Even at 39 years of age, Suarez scored six goals in 11 MLS games for Inter Miami in the last season. He has been Uruguay’s biggest supporter from the stands during the ongoing World Cup. While his country faces a big challenge of overcoming Spain to reach the knockout rounds, another drama has struck the South American locker room involving their head coach.

Recent claims suggest Uruguay captain Fede Valverde along with other players had issues with Bielsa’s intensive training sessions. They even had issues with the coach's tactical decision for the upcoming game against Spain. Meanwhile, Bielsa stood firm on his stance which in turn worsened the situation with the players.
For Uruguay to qualify for the Round of 32, they will need to defeat Spain which would also earn them the top spot in Group H. While that may be a major challenge, another threat for them would be Cabo Verde defeating Saudi Arabia and finishing the group above Uruguay.
Nevertheless, while Bielsa may be well known as “El Loco” throughout the soccer world, he is undoubtedly one of the most revolutionary coaches in modern soccer. Uruguay has shown traits of a strong team under him despite missing its greatest scorer.
