The Baltimore Ravens’ 13-10 loss to the Cleveland Browns in Week 6 exposed how little margin the offense has without Lamar Jackson, and it put the backup quarterback plan under a sharper microscope before Cincinnati arrives in Week 7.
Ravens quarterback Tyler Huntley completed 19 of 31 passes for 165 yards and a touchdown in his second straight start, but Locked On Ravens host Kevin Oestreicher put the loss primarily on the veteran. Oestreicher said, “This game was on Tyler Huntley,” pointing to missed throws and passes that could’ve been intercepted.
Baltimore opened with a touchdown and field goal on its first two possessions, then failed to score on its final nine drives. Seven ended in punts, one ended with a missed field goal and one ended with a fumble by Baltimore Ravens running back Derrick Henry. Oestreicher did not pin the defeat on Henry, arguing Huntley’s missed opportunities did more damage than the turnover.
Oestreicher also questioned the offensive rhythm under Ravens offensive coordinator Declan Doyle, particularly the repeated early-down runs that allowed the Browns to crowd Henry. His proposed adjustment was more first-down play-action and quicker throws, a way to create manageable situations without asking Huntley to repeatedly win on deeper throws.
The more immediate issue is Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson (ankle). Ravens head coach Jesse Minter said Monday that Jackson has made progress, but his status remains day-to-day and the team will know more when practice resumes Wednesday. Jackson has missed the past two games after being injured in Week 4, and Baltimore is 1-1 with Huntley starting in his place.
The Ravens can take a real positive from a defense that recorded five sacks against Cleveland, but the result still dropped Baltimore to 4-2. If Jackson cannot return against the Cincinnati Bengals, Baltimore will need a cleaner plan around Huntley than it had in Cleveland.
