The Los Angeles Rams’ biggest offensive question entering Sunday night is whether wide receiver Puka Nacua can play. Locked On Rams host Travis Rodgers said Nacua’s outlook did not sound encouraging at the time of recording, and his absence would put far more of the passing-game burden on fellow wide receiver Davante Adams against Denver Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain II.
That is not simply an injury-report subplot. Rodgers said Nacua’s presence changes the matchup math because Surtain cannot cover both receivers. If Nacua is unavailable, quarterback Matthew Stafford may have to repeatedly test Denver’s top cover man with Adams or shift more opportunities toward running back Kyren Williams and the tight end group.
Adams supplied the clearest evidence of his value in the Week 2 win over the New York Giants, when he delivered the big game Rodgers referenced on the crossover. The Rams can still create answers without Nacua, but their preferred approach becomes harder when Surtain can follow Adams without leaving another elite target unattended.
Rodgers expects Rams head coach Sean McVay and Stafford to keep attacking rather than avoid the matchup. He said Adams does not need to beat Surtain on every rep; he needs enough wins to keep the offense moving. That calculation becomes much more difficult if Adams is the unquestioned focal point of the game plan.
The alternatives are clear. Rodgers pointed to tight ends Terrance Ferguson and Colby Parkinson as potential counters, while a larger workload for running backs Kyren Williams and Blake Corum could help keep Denver from loading up on Adams. Those options give McVay flexibility, but none recreates the stress caused by two premier receivers aligned in the same offense.
The final injury report will determine how aggressively Denver can build its coverage plan around Adams. If Nacua plays, Surtain’s assignment remains a headline matchup within a deeper Rams passing attack. If he does not, Stafford’s ability to manufacture favorable looks for Adams could decide whether Los Angeles avoids a 1-2 start before trips to Philadelphia and a Week 5 home game against Buffalo.
Rams News and Notes
– Rodgers called the defense the club’s biggest unanswered question despite its Week 2 improvement. Defensive lineman Aaron Donald drew extensive attention in his return, and Rodgers said the front needs more consistent edge pressure around him against Denver’s experienced interior line.
– Special teams remain a concern. Rodgers said missed kicks, coverage issues, and a lack of a return threat continued to show up after last season’s problems, leaving little room for self-inflicted mistakes in a matchup between two teams with Super Bowl expectations.
