Wide receiver Ladd McConkey has been dealing with a foot injury ahead of the Los Angeles Chargers’ game against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 4, a development that would remove the offense’s most reliable target before one of its toughest defensive matchups. Locked On Chargers host Daniel Wade said McConkey was limited Wednesday before missing Thursday’s practice, while co-host David Droegemeier called the potential absence a major blow for an offense searching for consistency.
Wade and Droegemeier did not present a definitive timetable, but they raised the possibility that a longer absence could further damage the Chargers’ season. McConkey also dealt with a rib injury earlier this year, and the hosts argued that his ability to create separation, make difficult catches and contribute in the red zone has made him vital to the passing game.
Without McConkey, the receiving workload would fall heavily on wide receivers Quentin Johnston, Tre’ Harris and Derius Davis. Wade said the lack of depth leaves the Chargers little flexibility with Johnston, whose drops and missed chances on contested catches have become a focal point of the offense’s early struggles. The hosts also mentioned Brenen Thompson’s absence from practice as another concern for a thin group.
Chargers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel now faces the assignment of building an efficient plan around an undermanned group. The hosts said the offense needs more motion, screens, quick throws and checkdowns to keep quarterback Justin Herbert out of difficult down-and-distance situations against Seattle’s secondary. They also cited the need for receivers to help Herbert on imperfect throws after McDaniel’s pointed reminder that “receivers get paid too.”
The matchup leaves little margin for another uneven offensive performance. Wade and Droegemeier said the Chargers must avoid procedural penalties, finish drives in the red zone and give Herbert easier completions instead of repeatedly asking depleted receivers to win contested situations downfield. If McConkey cannot go, McDaniel’s scheme will have to compensate, while Harris and Johnston will have an immediate opportunity to determine whether the offense can stay functional in Seattle.
